He’s Making A Killing

Lord Of War is an excellent film. It blends a good story, a sprinkling of humour with a powerful morality tale. The film moves at a fast pace and Cage produces one of his strongest performances. The cinematography is excellent. The visuals superb. Fast crisp dialogue and tight editing.
Nic Cage is Yuri Orlav and he sells guns to anyone who pays, and any form of payment will do. Cash, drugs, diamonds, whatever you got.
Cage is excellent in the lead as the gun runner with no morals, who thinks fast on his feet in tight situations. Jared Ledo in a support role as Cage’s younger brother is excellent too. Ethan Hawke is the agent chasing Cage. Ian Holme is an opposite gun runner.

El Secreto De Sus Ojos

An Argentinian film in Spanish with English sub-titles and tells the story of an unsolved murder case that still haunts the main protagonist, played by Ricardo Darin, many years after he has retired.
He returns to his work place requesting help and permission to revisit and re-open the case. His request is declined and told to forget about it. Ignoring this advice he doggedly presses on with his investigations anyhow.
A thoughtful well-crafted movie with excellent performances, that are balanced, restrained and believable. Superb direction, a tight script, and excellent dialogue.
Brilliant.
Go get it. Watch it.
Runtime: 127 mins

Some Are Good

I came across a listing of ten movies reckoned to be the best of each decade since the 50s.
I can’t fully agree with the list. Some of the movies included are way over rated and there are a few omissions.
The list looks like this:
Top Ten Films of the ’90s
1. Goodfellas
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Fargo
4. The Silence of the Lambs
5. Three Kings

Trading Places

Many drunks have surfaced in movies over the years, some good, some not so good. The drunks have become a stock ingredient in many movies.
One drunk I watched recently and enjoyed loads, was Dan Ackroyd in Trading Places. It’s a great performance from Ackroyd, as the hapless, innocent Louis Winthorpe III. Ackroyd pulls out the stops and produces a memorable and funny drunk.
Having been duped and set-up by his employers, embarrased by his fiancee, arrested by the cops on trumped up charges, Ackroyd gets hammered and vows to get revenge on those who have wronged him

Utopian Dream

Gattaca, the name of the movie is composed of the letters A C G T. These are the four letters comprising all DNA sequences. The clue is in the name.
Gattaca tells the story of a utopian future where all desirable characteristics are selected much as you would a new kitchen or a new car. Intelligent, yes. Athletic, yes. Emotional equanimity yes. Blue eyes, yes. Fair hair, yes. Neurosis, no. Definitely no. And so defects are eliminated pre-conception.

Kill & Succeed

I love this movie. It has to be one of my all time favourites. Its on TCM and other TV channels all the time through re-runs and I can sit through it time and again.
Jack Lemmon takes the lead male role as Stanley Ford the confirmed batchelor with support from Terry Thomas playing the iconic English Butler. Virna Lisi plays his innocent non-english speaking wife.
